Updated November 5, 2026

Short answer: On the web, go to chatgpt.com/plugins, click the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server. Enter a name and the server URL, set up authentication, review the warning and click Create as a plugin. Then install it and type @ in a chat to use it.

Steps

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins on the web.
  2. Click the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server.
  3. Enter a name and optional description. Under Connection, enter your Server URL.
  4. Configure authentication.
  5. Review the risk warning and click I understand and want to continue.
  6. Click Create as a plugin.
  7. Find it under your personal plugins, or the workspace where you created it, and install it.
  8. In a chat, type @ and select the plugin.

These steps come from OpenAI's custom MCP server guide. ChatGPT's menus have moved several times, and availability can depend on your plan and workspace settings, so check there if you see something different.

What kind of server works?

ChatGPT connects by URL, or through a Secure MCP Tunnel, so a local server on your computer won't work without a tunnel. Our directory lists 456 hosted servers, and our remote server picks are a good place to start.

What sign-in options are supported?

Will ChatGPT take actions without asking?

By default, write actions need your confirmation. ChatGPT treats a tool as a write action unless the server marks it read-only. You can remember a choice within one conversation, but new conversations ask again.

OpenAI warns that an untrusted server can access data you share or trigger actions you did not intend, so connect only servers you trust. See are MCP servers safe?

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a local MCP server with ChatGPT?

Not directly. ChatGPT needs a server URL or a Secure MCP Tunnel, so a server that runs only on your computer has to be exposed through a tunnel.

Why can't I see my MCP tools in ChatGPT?

Make sure the plugin is installed, then type @ in the chat and select it. If tools have changed, refresh them from the app's details page in settings.
